Custom purchases Aqua Mix; company to retain name, management
Custom Building Products announced recently that it has purchased Aqua Mix Inc., the 26-year-old tile and stone care products maker based in Corona, Calif. According to Custom, based 40 miles west in Seal Beach, plans call for Aqua Mix to retain its name and current management team. Other terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

WFCA issues warning on credit card scam
The World Floor Covering Association is cautioning members to be on the lookout for a scam involving stolen credit cards and falsified orders for flooring. The trade organization says that it has heard from dealers in Texas, North Carolina and Wisconsin who said they have been targeted thus far.

Four trade organizations plan major industry events
Four major trade organizations are joining forces to bring tile professionals two free events outlining the progress of the tile industry. The National Tile Contractors Association, Tile Contractors Association of America, International Masonry Institute and International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers will present "Embracing Change in the Tile Industry" Oct. 18 and 19 at the Indianapolis Marriott Downtown and the Merchandise Mart of Chicago respectively.

Dougherty named vp marketing: "Florim USA a developing force"
With an eye toward significantly growing its ceramic tile brands, Florim USA has named Jim Dougherty vp marketing. A 25-year veteran of the industry, he will be responsible for developing marketing and customer service initiatives, including branding strategies for the company's Esquire and American Florim lines.

MAPEI’s Di Tempora to Retire, New CEO for the Americas Named
MAPEI Americas has announced the retirement of Nick Di Tempora, President and CEO, after 23 years with the company; Di Tempora will be succeeded by Ranier M. Blair, who has spent the past 16 years with BASF Corp. Di Tempora will remain as an adviser to Blair, who will function as deputy CEO during the transition period, according to the company.

StonExpo to branch out to East Coast in 2007; MIA to convene board of directors at show
Organizers of StonExpo, a major industry stone show held annually in Las Vegas, are planning to expand the reach of the event to the East Coast with the launch of StonExpo East. Slated for March 23-25, 2007 at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, StonExpo East aims to provide a forum for both stone manufacturers and stone professionals who are based in the area and might be otherwise unable to attend.

Radiant manufacturers heat up at Surfaces '06
While much of the attention at this year's Surfaces was paid to the floor, radiant heating systems and accessories makers urged showgoers to look beyond the floor and consider the benefits of radiant heating. Companies debuted new systems and materials engineered specifically for use with radiant heating technology. At least one manufacturer -- WarmlyYours -- had its sales force dressed down in bathrobes to illustrate the potential comfort offered by its radiant products.

In memoriam: Craig Hamilton
Craig W. Hamilton, a highly regarded figure in the ceramic tile and stone industry who served as director of research and development for MAPEI Corp., died as the result of a heart attack on Sept. 16. He was 55.

Coverings to rotate between Chi. & Orlando New plan set to take effect in 2007
In a bid to draw more attendance from Midwest states, organizers of the Coverings meeting said they will begin alternating the event between its present location in Orlando and Chicago. While next year’s edition of the tile and stone show is still scheduled to take place in Orlando, April 4-7, the following year it will move to Chicago’s McCormick Place Convention Center where it will be held from April 17-20, 2007. Previously, the show was held at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando.
