In memoriam: Craig Hamilton

January 6, 2006

Craig W. Hamilton, a highly regarded figure in the ceramic tile and stone industry who served as director of research and development for MAPEI Corp., died as the result of a heart attack on Sept. 16. He was 55.

A 20-year veteran of the industry who joined MAPEI in 1989, Hamilton was deeply committed to the industry. He served as president of the Materials & Methods Standards Association (MMSA) and had a strong role in the International Organization for Standards (ISO) where he acted as Convener of the ISO/TC 189 Working Group 3. In this role, Hamilton worked on the introduction of new, clearer standards for tile and stone adhesives and grouts.

The president of MAPEI Americas, Nick Di Tempora, recalled Hamilton’s unmistakable influence on those around him. “Craig had the ability to create a serene atmosphere with his presence, whether it was in a boardroom, at a trade show, or with friends and family. He was really one of a kind. His passing leaves us gravely saddened.”

Hamilton is survived by his wife, Nancy; mother, Virginia; sons, Nicholas and Michael; stepson and stepdaughter, Brian & Elyse Gruskin. A memorial service was held in Hamilton’s honor in Plantation, FL. At the family’s request, donations may be made, in memory of Craig W. Hamilton, to the following organizations: American Red Cross (www.redcross.org) and Noah’s Wish (www.noahswish.org).
